DISPOSAL POST ABDOMINAL SURGERY CASES

 

Reference : AIC 5 / 07  dated 01 Aug 2007

  • Conventional abdominal surgery / Inguinal and Incisional Hernias:

    • An aircrew will be considered unfit for a period of 12 weeks following which a complete assessment will be carried out

    • and if the surgical wound has healed properly, USG abdomen and other relevant investigations are normal and there is no post operative complication or evidence of incisional hernia the individual will be awarded a P1 Status.

    • Thereafter he can be awarded full flying status.

    • Cases with post-operative complications will be decided on the merits of the case

  • Laparoscopic Abdominal Surgery.

    • Initial period of unfitness will be for 08 weeks following which they will be awarded P1 status, provided they fulfill the criteria mentioned above.

    • The President Medical Board, at his discretion may increase the initial period of unfitness to 12 weeks followed by full flying status, provided they fulfill the criteria mentioned above.

    • Cases with post-operative complications will be decided on the merits of the case

  • Lap Cholecystectomy.

    • An aircrew who has undergone laproscopic cholecystectomy will be made unfit for flying for a period of 6 weeks after the date of surgery following which they can be given full flying status provided they fulfill the criteria mentioned as above.

    • Cases with post-operative complications will be decided on the merits of the case.

  • Post ESWL.

    • Post lithotripsy the individual will be made unfit for a period of 4 weeks.

    •  During review they will be thoroughly investigated again for any residual debris or persisting stones.

    • X-Ray KUB region and USG Abdomen & Pelvis is to be carried out.

    • If all investigations are normal and the individual is totally asymptomatic they will be awarded P1 status.

    • Cases with post-operative complications will be decided on the merits of the case.

  • The P1 status pertains to pilots fully fit for all flying duties, including instructional duties. P2 status pertains to fit for all flying duties except instructional duties and trainer captain in flight.
